All of us who live in Los Angeles are fortunate. To quote the late great Robert Nesta Marley: “The sun is shining. The weather is sweet. Makes me wanna move my dancing feet.”

When I take time to savor the flavor this city has for me, I have a little happy dance I do called “I wish Ms. Silver could see me now.”

Ms. Silver is the woman who raised me. Besides her amazing stories and wise words of wisdom, I miss another thing about her: her home-cooked food!

Luckily, there’s an extended version of home-cooked food here in Los Angeles for all of us. Glencrest in Venice has the look, feel and most important, the taste of the good food that you can’t find this far from home.

Glencrest’s Chris tells me the reason for this is that all of the recipes were handed down from his mother and grandmother from their 22 years in business here. He explains that it’s the Texas Southern-style food that gives it its deliciousness.

From the daily specials of red beans and rice with a corn muffin, to chicken in the basket with French fries and a home-cooked roll, to everyone’s favorite – the double cheeseburger with fries and sweet fresh squeezed lemonade – it’s all good.

While primarily a take-out place, there’s seating in the window for three to four. This is recommended because within a few minutes inside you’ll see the old autographed photo of Bob Marley on the wall, and you’ll realize the sun is shining (with a Ms. Silver lining), the weather is sweet, and we are all fortunate to be here.
