If folk music is making a return, then KT Tunstall has earned her place at its forefront. The Scottish singer-songwriter’s new album, Drastic Fantastic, offers up a wide array of mostly acoustic tunes infused with Tunstall’s uniquely soulful voice.

The album starts off a bit slow but, by the third track, takes off running. Songs like “Funnyman” and “Hopeless” manage to be amazingly catchy and yet still somehow sad and poignant. The single “Hold On” will have you moving in your seat.

By the last few tracks, however, the album seems to switch completely, going from up-tempo toe-tappers to ethereal, slow numbers. The songs are equally masterful, but the switch is fairly extreme, and if you bought the album for the high-energy numbers, you might be a bit turned off. But with time, they’ll grow on you.
