Free improvisation is an uncertain situation for most jazz performers. Only a few pianists have released commercially successful extemporaneous excursions: Cecil Taylor and Keith Jarrett come to mind.

Vanguard jazz artist Muhal Richard Abrams’ Vision Towards Essence, which captures Abrams at the apex of his art, is a continuous, three-part, one-hour performance where nothing is planned, and the 88 piano keys become a conduit for Abrams’ imagination and brilliant tonality.
