During the first season of “SNL” or “Saturday Night” as it was called then, the show’s producer Lorne Michaels and his cast of “Not Ready For Primetime Players” were still finding the show’s voice.

By the second season, “Saturday Night” was a veritable phenomenon, with a cast that included: Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin and the show’s first superstar, Weekend Update host, Chevy Chase. By the middle of the second season, the increasingly difficult Chase would leave the show to pursue a movie career, but one of the show’s most famous alumni, Bill Murray, would soon replace him.

The stellar season includes guest hosts: Eric Idle (Monty Python), Lily Tomlin, a young Jodie Foster, Elliott Gould, Sissy Spacek, the first of Steve Martin’s many appearances and, in keeping with the show’s earlier more political slant, Ralph Nader.

Musical guests include: Brian Wilson, Frank Zappa, Chuck Berry, the Kinks, Tom Waits, the Band and Joe Cocker in his famous duet with Belushi doing his Cocker impression. Extras: Andy Kaufman screen test, the Mardi Gras special and dress rehearsal audio excerpts.
