Quirky is a word that doesn’t even begin to describe this release from the production team of John Turturro and the Coen Brothers. A twisted musical comedy that begs to be awarded cult status, Romance & Cigarettes is a tapestry of adultery and revenge, love and death spun by a cast of offbeat characters that are portrayed by some of film’s best.

The musical numbers are hilarious, following in the footsteps of avant-garde musicals like Moulin Rouge and Velvet Goldmine by using popular songs in a new context. Pirouetting garbage men and a knocked-up chorus line make for some memorable moments.

Deleted scenes and a documentary offered up on the DVD version offer some insight into how much fun the cast and crew must have had making this bizarre piece and for once are actually worth viewing.
