The appeal of the Hollywood romantic comedy often rests solely on the appeal of two leads and their chemistry together. Content to slap together plot and dialogue in a sort of piecemeal fashion – cute kid, scrumptious food, feisty character, bitter character – the film business seems to have all but given up on creating an original and complete story (barring the new rowdy-boy genre of Knocked Up and Wedding Crashers).

So, it should come as no surprise that No Reservations (based on the much better German film Mostly Martha) relies heavily on its winsome leads, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin to inject some personality and verve into their thinly sketched characters.
