Based on the bestseller by Jon Krakauer, the film, directed by Sean Penn, tells the true story of Christopher McCandless, a wealthy college graduate who gives all his money away and sets out on his own in search of “ultimate freedom.” Along the way he takes odd jobs and comes into contact with various people, eventually landing in the Alaskan wilderness in an abandoned bus.

Some might find McCandless an infuriatingly naïve character, others an inspiring folk hero. Penn’s direction certainly leans toward the latter. The film is hindered by on-the-nose voice-over and self-important poetry, which serve to mask a weak narrative structure.
