Are there any gay love stories with happy endings? Boys Love is yet another addition to the overflowing spectrum of tragic gay cinema. This one, though, is about androgynous Japanese boys in love, which sounds almost alluring – but isn’t.

Named after a genre of gay-inspired manga, the story is about the tender but reluctant love that emerges between a teenage-looking magazine reporter named Taishin Mamiya (Yoshikazu Kotani) and an adult-looking teen male model, Noeru Kisaragi (Takumi Saito).

Although the movie takes itself too seriously, complete with awkward naked booty shots that are too contrived to be sexy, there’s something poignant to be said about the love that grows on Taishin’s part. He doesn’t fall in love with Noeru because of his Y-chromosome; rather, he falls for the person that Noeru is.
