Daniel Beaty offers a unique presentation with his one-man show 'Emergency,' portraying an entire cast of characters caught up in the mayhem that surrounds a slave ship surfacing from the waters just off of Liberty Island, N.Y. The quirky story allows Beaty to reflect upon what he thinks it’s like to be an African-American today, and it enables him to showcase his gifts as a writer and poet.

Acting as every character in the production is a bit schizophrenic at times. There’s not enough differentiation between some of them in the same scene to always know who is who, but Beaty’s talent is still impressive in his portrayals.

By far, his true brilliance lies in his poetry: engaging, strong and refreshingly entertaining.
