Jean-Luc Godard’s outright political commentary on 1967 France has been re-released this year. The story of French college students who take up the teachings of Chairman Mao of communist China and decide that they must convert the world to a Maoist community by any means necessary, even violence, may seem dated today, but is nevertheless an important document of both the politics and film of that revolutionary time period.

It becomes apparent in this film that Godard was not interested in making something that appealed to mass audiences. He combines a vivid, predominantly red aesthetic with sharp political observations to create a film that remains inventive, strong and important even today.
