Rosalind (a superb Willow Geer) is banished to the Forest of Arden and adopts a male persona to hide from her malevolent uncle. Meanwhile, lovers converge in the woods, and Rosalind must hide her true nature from her true love.
Directors Ellen Geer and Melora Marshall set the comedy during the Reconstruction (post-Civil War), and several characters speak with Southern drawls. It works primarily due to the talented cast.
“As You Like It” has many plot contrivances that are far-fetched by modern standards, but it has some of Shakespeare’s most mellifluous poetry.
