A flawed, melodramatic biopic about silent screen legend Lon Chaney, the film is kept afloat by James Cagney’s strong performance.

In typical biopic form, the script proposes Chaney’s deaf parents as the driving force in his life and work creating outsider characters. We follow Chaney’s career from vaudeville clown (an opportunity to show off Cagney’s dancing skills) to silver screen chameleon in The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
