The readers of the highly respected metalhead mag Burrn! have recently voted Grand Magus lead singer J.B. Christoffersson the eighth best metal vocalist in the world. It doesn’t hurt that his voice recalls that of one of classic metal’s most popular singers ever, Ronnie James Dio.

That’s not the only thing familiar here; Grand Magus favors the music of that era too, pretty much patterning themselves after what you find in the Dio/Deep Purple/Rainbow songbook. Don’t expect rip-offs of “Holy Diver” or “Smoke on the Water,” though. Grand Magus perform their tribute without any larceny, and since they’re from Sweden, they can’t resist throwing in a little of the darkness that Scandinavian metal bands are famous for.
