Frank (Bjørn Johnson), a rumpled alcoholic professor, accepts a tutoring position at his college for some extra cash. When Rita a.k.a. Susan (Rebecca Mozo), a streetwise hairdresser with a thirst for knowledge, enters his life, the two are forever changed.

Last season Cameron Watson directed a critically acclaimed smash hit, “Trying” at the Colony. Unfortunately, lightning doesn’t strike twice with his newest production.

It’s difficult not to make comparisons to the Oscar-nominated movie version of Educating Rita, but Watson’s version suffers from casting choices. Johnson lacks the charm and charisma to play Frank. Mozo is in desperate need of a dialogue coach.

There are some witty and wonderful moments in the play, and some audience members were able to overlook the flaws in the production and just enjoy the story. The Colony Theatre is located at 555 N. Third St., Burbank. For more information, visit www.colonytheatre.org.
