An intimate and intense coming of age story, Water Lilies follows the lives of three young girls: the lanky and wise Marie, flirtatious bad girl Floriane and the geeky, awkward Anne. That the girls are all involved in synchronized swimming allows for exploration of the awkwardness of budding sexuality in a natural setting. The extent to which this film dives into the subject is distinctly French, allowing for far more revealing of the young actresses’ bodies than is seen in Hollywood.

Director Céline Sciamma shows tremendous promise with this debut film, but hopefully she can bring greater meaning and a stronger plot to future efforts. The young talents introduced here will be the ones to watch in future French cinematic offerings.
