What we have here is a tale of two bonds: One between Duke (James Garner) and the woman (Gena Rowlands) he reads to daily, and another between Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams), as detailed in Duke’s story. It’s hard to say which one you saps will cherish more.

The Notebook borrows some selections from the "star-crossed lovers" songbook and seems perfectly content to let you see several critical turns approaching from two miles away. But familiarity is no match for a good love story, and this one – spirited in jest, love and loss all at once – is a gem.

Extras: Director commentary, commentary with author Nicholas Sparks (author of the book upon which the film is based), deleted scenes, four backstage features, DVD-ROM script.

Grade: A- The Notebook is currently available.
