I’ve always heard it said, when the going gets tough, the tough get going – to a spa. With the anxiety-provoking economy looming over our heads, it’s hard not to feel stressed out, which leads to all kinds of aches and pains in our bodies and blemishes on our faces.

So even though money is as tight as your shoulders, I highly recommend treating yourself to a spa service. Perhaps one of the most relaxing I’ve ever been to is One the Spa at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica.

Their signature body treatments have enticing titles like Nature Baby, using cucumber, honey and milk, and Body A.R.T., which features Ole Henriksen products including African Red Tea Self Heating Body Souffle and Lavender Oil and Sugar Scrub.

Then there’s Beach Buff, a Swedish Massage and Buff with Re-Texturizing Sea Mineral Body Scrub. The most unusually pleasurable part of this treatment: a Tropical Rain Rinse where you’re sprawled out on the table while warm rain falls from the ceiling on you causing an intense, yet soothing, all over body rush. “?? minutes of bliss,” they call it. Mmm…

When tension mounts, so too does acne. While eating right can help, there’s also extractions; joyful, and extremely satisfying (for me).

You can go for the Pore Baby! or Clear As Day facials, but I experienced the Chill Out. This is the spa’s signature beach facial, powered by calming botanicals that leave your face, clean, soft and glowing – a shine that lasts all week. I do not lie. I got a few less than 100 compliments on my appearance. Now that’s a treat that’s definitely worth indulging in.
