It has finally happened: Metal has grown large enough to consume the masses, and not with just one band. In the past, metal has been represented by a single band at a time – Pantera, Metallica, Slayer, etc. – but now there’s more than one pushing the limits of venue capacity, and Revolver has recognized that with the Golden Gods Awards.

“There’s a lot more bands than ever,” comments Tom Beaujour, Editor in Chief of Revolver Magazine. “I feel like metal got young again.”

And with this new spirit of the youth taking real metal further than ever, it finally can’t be ignored anymore.

The Golden God Awards ceremony celebrates and recognizes the leaders of this genre, with special appearances by Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Brendon Small of Dethklok and pro snowboarder Shaun White, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Ozzy Osbourne.

But the show wouldn’t be complete without some live music. Performers include Suicide Silence, Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, All That Remains, a DJ set by Corey Taylor of Slipknot and headliner’s Megadeth! In addition, MTV2 will be airing the awards show May 2 as a two-hour special.

Beaujour explains the decision to hold this event – which has been exclusive to Europe for over seven years – in Los Angeles:  “We chose L.A. because there is such a bigger metal scene out there, and there’s no Rainbow [Bar and Grill, on the Sunset Strip] in New York,” he says.

So, when you attend these awards, don’t hold back when you’re in the pit, Angelenos. The rest of the world is watching!
