Four Year Strong’s new album, Explains it All, is comprised of covers of popular songs like the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.” The band does manage to bring their own unique flair to the incredibly well known songs through unexpected vocal harmonies and accompaniment.

For example, the guitar solo at the end of No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs” flows perfectly out of the previous melodies, but it has more of a rock edge than the original. There’s even a collaboration between the band and Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes on the cover of Sugar Ray’s “Fly.”

While I commend Four Year Strong for bringing their own style and sound to the covers, the songs are simply too recognizable. In every case, I couldn’t help but think of and compare the tracks to the originals; and truth be told, I like the originals more.
