The first volume of Scott Allie’s adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s Puritan adventurer fleshes out a never-finished story by Howard. Kane is kind of like Van Helsing crossed with a samurai, wandering the world, dispensing with evil by his own code of honor.

In this story, Kane comes across the body of a young boy hanging from a gallows in the haunted Black Forest of Germany. He sets off to the cursed castle to confront the mysterious Baron and get justice.

Allie provides plenty of surprises along the way. Artist Mario Guevara does an excellent job evoking the gothic world of Satanic rituals, demons and werewolves.

It’s a great “new” character with plenty of potential in the graphic medium.
