Over 100 years ago, the world witnessed the tragic downfall of legendary playwright Oscar Wilde. Tried and charged with sodomy and pederasty, he was sentenced to two years of hard labor and relegated to financial ruin.

In “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde,” playwright Moises Kaufman juxtaposes the trial transcripts, journalistic articles, Wilde’s own writing and later biographies to create a brilliant commentary against social determinism. The perfect blend of history, comedy and tragedy set in a courtroom drama makes this a riveting and entertaining story of a man who wished to live a life according to his own rules.

The play opens the audience’s eyes to the prejudices of homophobic societies, and the additional themes on public perception of art and class make the story universally relatable.
