Bruins

The UCLA defense shut down a solid Tennessee football team and silenced more than 102,000 fans at Knoxville’s Neyland Stadium, as the Bruins (2-0) defeated the Volunteers (1-1) for the second straight season, 19-15, on Saturday afternoon.

“I thought our defense, from the second quarter through the end of the third, really dominated the football game,” UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel said in a post-game press conference. “The field position, the turnovers, I just felt like our defense was taking over the game, so it wasn’t necessary to be real risky offensively.”

What UCLA lacked on offense (Quarterback Kevin Prince had just 101 yards passing.), it made up on defense, which forced three interceptions, had three sacks and limited the Vols to 93 passing yards and 115 rushing yards.

Trailing 19-13 late in the game, Tennessee was stopped by UCLA in a goal-line stand. After the Vols scored on a safety, the Bruin defense prevented Tennessee from scoring in the final minute to hold on for the victory.

Due to a late-game fracture to his jaw, Prince will be out three to four weeks. UCLA will face the 1-1 Kansas State Wildcats at the Rose Bowl Sept. 19.

Trojans

The Buckeyes lost their sixth-straight game to a Top 5 opponent, as Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley led USC on an 86-yard game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter to vault third-ranked Southern Cal (2-0) past eighth-ranked Ohio State (1-1), 18-15, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 105,000 at the Horseshoe in Columbus. It was USC’s 10th consecutive victory over a Big-10 opponent.

Barkley marched the Trojans from as deep as their own five-yard line with 6:09 remaining in the game, using 14 plays to set up the game-winning, two-yard touchdown run by Stafon Johnson with 1:05 remaining to stun the Buckeyes.

“I think it’s a beautiful statement for our whole team,” Trojan head coach Pete Carroll said in the post-game press conference. “It was really a great job by a lot of guys.”

USC travels to Washington for their first Pac-10 battle, against the 1-1 Huskies, Saturday.
