If you find yourself stricken with a pesky summer cold, A Woman of Independent Means could be just the remedy to get you through it. Based on the novel by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, this epic miniseries follows Bess Steed Garner, played by Sally Field, through seven decades as her fortunes and family rise and fall.

Slightly miscast in the beginning of story – at the age of 50 she plays 18 – Field grows into her part as Garner ages. She slowly embodies the character with her homespun charms and earthy spirit – the trademark Field feistiness is also on display to good effect.

A Woman of Independent Means provides a cozy and nostalgic way to pass a few hours recuperating from modern life.
