Ho hum, another day, another Hollywood remake – that’s what it sometimes feels like reviewing DVDs. This week’s offering, Sleuth, a remake of the 1972 version, stars Michael Caine and Jude Law. The older version also starred Caine in Law’s part, with Lawrence Olivier.

I get tired of always reporting that the earlier movie worked better, but generally speaking, the earlier picture does work better. Why do people insist on remaking everything?

Directed by the self-loving Kenneth Branagh, Sleuth portrays two men locked in a battle of wills over the same woman. Rather than suspenseful, the movie mostly falls flat.
