Compelling performances propel standard biopic fare. Johnny Cash, country music’s outlaw, seems ill fitted for the formula, but that doesn’t stop them from reissuing this overrated musical/melodrama with the “extended cut” treatment, inflating the runtime to a totally unwarranted 153 minutes.

This edition comes with a commentary by writer/director James Mangold, extended musical sequences and several poorly put together Cash featurettes, which squander interviews with the likes of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Ozzy Osbourne and Henry Rollins by including no actual Cash music and opting for endless stills of Joaquin Phoenix as Cash rather than securing rights to actual photos of the subject.
