Guy Maddin’s “97 percent true” film is about a character named Guy Maddin who returns home to the orphanage that his parents operated and raised him in. Aptly titled (and punctuated), the film explores Maddin’s traumatic childhood with a tyrannical mother, her omniscient lighthouse and the orphanage’s terrible secret.

Through a bombardment of picture, text and sound, director Maddin attempts to brand the viewer’s brain with the same emotional assault that his protagonist has suffered. Like most of Maddin’s work, the salvo of jumbled, impressionistic images, hypnotic music, narration by Isabella Rossellini and pastiches to silent cinema become exhausting, teetering on the brink of self-indulgence. Still, it’s a unique cinematic statement that you won’t soon forget.
