Keri Russell plays the eponymous waitress Jenna, a true-heart type who finds herself in a bad marriage going nowhere fast. Russell anchors the movie with her winsome sincerity tempered by a newfound, gritty realism.
Knocked up and stuck, Jenna puts her energy, creative and otherwise, into baking pies – many unusual and original – with names like “I Hate My Husband Pie.”
The quirkiness serves the film well up until the point where it doesn’t.
One-joke supporting players and a spouse (Jeremy Sisto) who seems to have walked off into a different movie set sometimes gives Waitress a sour note.
