Buju stepped out from behind the turntables some years back to become one of Jamaica’s most popular singers. His husky voice and exuberant African dancing make for a commanding stage presence. Unfortunately, that fails to translate on Island Life. Banton’s performance obviously thrilled the large crowd in Nassau, the Bahamas, and a large portion of this DVD is taken up with shots of happy swaying bodies. But poor sound and even poorer videography makes it tough to enjoy the music or get to feelin’ irie. The concert was apparently not taped through the soundboard, and the herky-jerky visuals leave one believing that the cameramen were too busy dancing to do their job properly. Still there are a few moments of bliss, like guest Wayne Wonder’s hit "Let’s Be Friends." Wonder’s sweet voice is the perfect contrast to Buju’s rasp, and the two duet on several songs to close the show. Banton is Jamaican slang for "storyteller," but Buju’s gift for gab is buried here. Island Life is best left to hard-core fans of Buju Banton and dancehall archivists.
