A new study published this month in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs revealed that about 40 percent of designated drivers consume alcohol at some point during the night before driving; one-fifth of these drink to a level that would, in theory, hurt their ability to drive safely. The study follows a motion in May from federal investigators suggesting the U.S. legal intoxication limit be lowered to .05 from .08. Next time you recruit a designated driver, it would be helpful to make sure they are not drinking to excess as well.
