In a monumental step forward for gay rights and human rights alike, Wednesday morning the Supreme Court ruled that Prop 8 (the proposition prohibiting gay marriage in California) and DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) were both unconstitutional. The court’s statement asserted, "DOMA violates basic due process and equal protection principles applicable to the federal government. Under DOMA same-sex married couples have their lives burdened, by reason of government decree, in visible and public ways.” Californians have taken to social media to declare their excitement and commend America for this large-scale political accomplishment.
