According to research and data collected by American Civil Liberties Union through Freedom of Information requests, it has been revealed that police officers are able to use license plate scanners to collect information on millions of Americans, criminal or not. This means innocent Americans' random data is stored throughout the 38 states that were examined. These scanners have been traditionally used to combat car theft and criminal getaways, yet the data reveals that random information can be kept for years, and many are confused as to why.
