According to Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), there are currently 58,000 homeless students attending colleges across the nation.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth states that many of those students do not receive enough financial aid and support from parents. Many of those students are unable to provide parents’ information during the application process, and some parents neglect to support them by focusing on younger children.

Tina Giarla is one of the 58,000 students. She attended Salem State and struggled trying to find a way to live. However, she was able to continue her education by reaching out to her professors and counselors. Giarla urges colleges nationwide to provide services such as on-campus food banks and scholarships to help homeless students.
