Summer is a great time to develop musical skills and The Los Angeles College of Music offers multiple experiences spanning over three weeks designed to give teens aged 12 and up, college students and students of all ages interested in music as a career a leg up on the competition. LACM’s Summer at LACM programs include the ever-popular Summer Xperience, which offers programs in Music Performance, Songwriting, Music Production, Composing for Visual Media, Music Entrepreneurship, Independent Artist Study and the brand-new Pro Artist track, as well as new favorites “Bandwidth Jazz and the Journey” taught by LACM Faculty Brian Lipps (Michael Bublé, John Mayer, Joe Lababera Jazz Quintet) and “Rap & Hip-Hop Change the World” taught by LACM Faculty Jameel Roberts (Lizzo, Usher, Ariana Grande).

Geared towards music enthusiasts of all skill levels, the Summer at LACM program includes master classes, private lessons, student recitals, large ensembles and recording sessions taught by LACM faculty and current top musicians, songwriters and producers. Whether students want to enter the world of recording and music production, get intensive training in performance technique for guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or vocals, get one-of-a kind immersion into the art and craft of songwriting, they will be able to get up close and personal at a renowned music school with some of the most respected names in the music industry.  Participants leave inspired, transformed and with skills to drive their music forward.

“Small class sizes and intensive one-on-one coaching make this a program that is truly unique,” said Erin Workman, LACM Executive Vice President and Songwriting & Music Business Department Head who has worked with and influenced the early careers of Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron and Selena Gomez. “I’ve seen students go from never having performed on stage and holding great fear about it to fronting a band and discovering their ability to engage an audience in an exciting way – all in 5 days. Students who have never been able to record in a professional studio before walk away with 2-3 recorded original songs, with the confidence built during the sessions to elevate their artistry to a new level.”

LACM Jazz Department Head Bryan Lipps, featured on Michael Bublé’s 2023 Grammy-Winning record Higher and international touring soloist for Bublé and John Mayer, will be teaching “Bandwidth, Jazz & the Journey.” Along with playing with the pros in ensembles, private lessons, performance and recording opportunities, the week-long course will teach about the business and music technology behind creating a successful career path.

LACM Songwriting & Music Business Faculty Jameel Roberts (Lizzo, Usher, Ariana Grande) will be teaching “Rap & Hip-Hop Change the World.” The program partners with the Subversive Foundation to provide a unique program focused on artist development, lyrics, writing, beat-making and other skills. The week-long session focuses on creating music with a message and is tailored towards students that want to make a difference with their music. Full scholarships are offered to applicants with financial need provided by Subvers!ve Music Foundation. All tracks must contain lyrics with a positive message.

The new Pro-Artist Track is designed for more seasoned musicians to help unleash the potential of their music career. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with industry professionals to develop their unique artistry through a week-long project including recording one to two original songs in the LACM state-of-the-art recording studio and to record a performance style music video to one of your songs. They will also leave with a logo or branding package to develop your aesthetic.

Music Performance, Music Production, Bandwidth: Jazz & the Journey and Independent Artist Study are held Week 1: June 19-June 23;  Songwriting, Advanced Music Production, Rap & Hip-Hop Change the World and Independent Artist Study Courses are held Week 2: June 26-June 30; and Pro Artist, Music Entrepreneurship, Composing for Visual Media and Independent Artist Study are held Week 3: July 3-July 7. Online programming is offered for Music Production during Week 1, Advanced Music Production during Week 2, and Composing for Visual Media and Music Entrepreneurship Week 3.  Each session can be taken individually or as a multi-session experience.

All Summer at LACM students under the age of 18 will be paired in peer groups, led by an adult LACM mentor. Their mentor will assist them in finding their classes and private lessons, and help them navigate the resources available to students at LACM. This mentor will be available to the student throughout each day, from the moment they arrive on campus to the moment they leave each evening. LACM employs a check-in and check-out system to ensure they’ve been picked up by a guardian or chaperoned back to their hotel at the end of the day.

Costs for Summer at LACM are $1,695.00 per week on campus and $895.00 online.
