Run-DMC, Snoop Dogg and many more of hip hop’s biggest names will celebrate the genre’s 50th anniversary this summer with a concert where it originated: the Bronx.
Yankee Stadium on Aug. 11 will host the “Hip Hop 50″ extravaganza that’s also set to feature performances by Lil Wayne, Eve, T.I. and hip hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc.
“Back in the Bronx, where it all started,” the Yankees tweeted Monday.
Many credit DJ Kool Herc — whose real name is Clive Campbell — with introducing hip-hop at a party in the South Bronx on Aug. 11, 1973. Among the other groundbreaking performers scheduled for the 50th anniversary concert are his sister, Cindy Campbell, as well as Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow and Roxanne Shante.
The lineup includes a mix of big-name artists from the five boroughs and rappers born outside of New York.
Run-DMC, the top-billed act in Monday’s announcement, hails from Queens and is known for hits such as “It’s Tricky” and its “Walk This Way” collaboration with Aerosmith. Remy Ma and Fat Joe, who are both from the Bronx, are also set to perform, as is Lil’ Kim of Brooklyn and Ghostface Killah of Staten Island.
Bringing a California flair are Snoop Dogg, whose many hits include “Gin and Juice” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” and Ice Cube, who got his start with Compton-based N.W.A. The lineup also features Chicago artists in Common and Lupe Fiasco. Lil Wayne, meanwhile, is from New Orleans.
“I am honored to hit the stage in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip hop and celebrate all of my heroes,” Joseph Simmons, known as Run from Run-DMC, said in a statement.
Organizers say Lil’ Kim, Eve, Remy Ma and Trina will take part in the concert’s “Queens of Hip Hop” set.
Tickets to the concert are available via presale on Thursday and to the general public on Friday through Ticketmaster.
The concert will kick off a major music weekend at Yankee Stadium, where the Jonas Brothers are scheduled to play back-to-back shows on Aug. 12 and 13.
