The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles is currently hosting three unique exhibitions worth exploring for visitors of all ages. After previewing the exhibits, this first installment takes a closer look at Outsiders, Outcasts, Rebels, and Weirdos: Punk Culture 1976–86.

Opening during the 50th anniversary of punk music in the United States, the exhibition explores the connective tissue of punk by tracing influential music scenes across both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. More than a music exhibit, it examines how outsiders and underground creatives helped rewire culture while also highlighting the often-overlooked relationship between Jewish musicians and the punk scene, particularly in New York.

Featuring more than 500 objects, Outsiders, Outcasts, Rebels, and Weirdos brings the era into sharp focus through a dynamic collection of artifacts, photography, fashion, printed material, and multimedia installations.

One of the standout elements is the exhibit’s incredible collection of vintage punk posters. As a poster collector myself, I was especially impressed by both the rarity and exceptional condition of many of the pieces on display.

The exhibit’s button collection is another highlight. Presented in a single glass case, the buttons capture the fashion, identity, and attitude embraced by punk followers during the movement’s rise. Visitors will also find an extensive assortment of zines, flyers, and printed materials that once promoted concerts, music, and punk culture throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Additional highlights include video and listening installations, fashion displays featuring designs by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, and rare photographs of artists whose influence continues to resonate today.

One particularly section features a map spotlighting punk venues throughout greater Los Angeles, including Larchmont Hall in Larchmont Village. Yes, punk shows once took place on upscale Larchmont Boulevard.

In the end, looking at these posters, artists, artifacts and listening to bands like the Ramones — visitors are reminded of the lasting impact punk continues to have on music, fashion, and culture.

Outsiders, Outcasts, Rebels, and Weirdos: Punk Culture 1976–86 runs through September 6, 2026 at the Skirball Cultural Center, located at 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90049.
