Seeing three kings of Texas troubadour twang live conjures up enough sentiment to drown your horse in tears. Unfortunately, watching this DVD just flat out causes your horse to fall asleep.

When Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price – Country Music Hall-of-Famers and living legends – get together, their history is strong enough that flaccid performances and low-energy vocals can pass for brilliant, just from familiarity. When it comes to this DVD, however, which features a mind-boggling 35 songs, there isn’t much to scream about.

Price starts it off with some incredible songs, but on DVD, he just doesn’t fly. Sure, he’s got the industry’s finest behind him, but whereas a strong musical performance enhances the sound quality, it fails to jumpstart the visual.

Haggard is second, and even his electric live band (that marvelously stole the show from Bob Dylan on 2005’s live tour), fails to get the viewer involved. “Mama Tried” and “Okie from Muskogee” sound amazing, but again, we are talking DVD here, and there ain’t much to look at.

Willie is the perennial rock star, and his presence is enough to gaze upon longingly for his hour-long performance, but he’s at a point where he seems to speak his way through his brilliant tunes. As fun as it is to watch him, there are plenty of Willie concerts caught on DVD from the past 20 years that blow this collection away.

Extras: Ray Benson interviews Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price on Willie’s tour bus before Willie gives a guided tour of the drugged out motorcoach.
