The Melvins: Salad of a Thousand Delights

Watching
this live Melvins video may be hazardous to your health. The camera mimics
the music, putting the band so in-your-face that you might pogo right
into the ceiling fan or stage dive onto an unsuspecting coffee table.
Salad was recorded in 1991 at a packed North Shore Surf Club in Olympia,
Washington, back when the trio consisted of Buzz, Dale and Joe. The show
starts with a moving rendition of "Antioxidote" that puts the
crowd in such a frenzy (sending them on stage at one point) that Buzzo
is forced to tell the crowd to "mellow out a little." Strange
but necessary words from guys who grunt their way through the primal "Oven."
That song makes the stinging garage guitar of "If I Had An Exorcism"
sound downright sophisticated. The Sabbath-like shouter "Boris"
is included here, as is the feedback festival of "Kool Legged."
Thrash is momentarily left behind on "It’s Shoved," Buzz’
lead melding surf rhythm with Jimi Hendrix psychedelia. Bonus footage
includes about fifteen minutes from a show at Seattle’s Off Ramp,
complete with drummer Dale dancing in his bikini underwear. A few minutes
of the Melvins in studio in 1984 rounds out this great archive. Try not
to spit at the TV.
