The image of Kurt Cobain strumming his guitar while sitting onstage in his frumpy green sweater surrounded by flowers and candles during Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged” taping will forever be imprinted in the memories of the band’s fans. Filmed on Nov. 18, 1993, just five months before Cobain’s death, the unforgettable performance is finally available in its complete, unedited 66-minute form.

Besides acoustic versions of Nirvana classics like “Polly,” “Come as You Are,” “About A Girl,” “On A Plain,” “Something in the Way” and “All Apologies,” the group covers songs from David Bowie (“The Man Who Sold the World”), the Vaselines (“Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam”) and the Meat Puppets. Curt and Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets also join the band for renditions of “Plateau” and “Lake of Fire.”

Some of the best moments of the DVD are the interactions between Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and second guitarist Pat Smear, formerly of the Germs. (Smear would also become part of Grohl’s original Foo Fighters lineup.)

The camaraderie and humor shared between the members – like when they launch into an impromptu “Sweet Home Alabama” in between songs – are evident and serve as an ideal way to always remember this pioneering group of musicians.

Extras: rehearsal footage of “Come as You Are,” “Polly,” “Plateau,” “Pennyroyal Tea” and “The Man Who Sold the World,” MTV News “Bare Witness” documentary featuring interviews with the band, MTV production staff and fans from the audience.
