For those unfamiliar with Islands, two of the members were originally in the Unicorns. In that band they created a sound that was as lo-fi as it was exuberant and indulgent.

While their playfulness is still visible, Islands have created a more focused, indie pop sound. Their performance played to both their older fans from the early post-Unicorn’s days to the newer fans with their most recent release.

Islands played a mix of songs from their previous album, Return to the Sea, and last month’s Arm’s Way. Songs from Return garnered cheers from the crowd as they danced along to the familiar tunes, while the newer songs from Arm’s were received by a more focused audience.

Much of the new material has a different aesthetic, with more lush arrangements, but still manages to be playful. As an old or new fan, the Island’s show was fun and colorful.
