This concert, taped in 2002 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s 50th birthday, opens with Brian May’s bombastic version of “God Save the Queen” from the roof of the palace. But the show quickly grinds to a halt, not recovering until the Corrs take the stage with a cover of “The Long and Winding Road.”

There are some great artists: Elton John, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, the Kinks’ Ray Davies, what they call Queen (can there be Queen without Freddie Mercury?). But does Ricky Martin really deserve to share the same stage as them?

The whole thing is ill conceived. A typically shell-shocked Brian Wilson doing “California Girls?” Really? For the Queen of England? And while McCartney is well represented, what about England’s greatest gift to the world, John Lennon, who doesn’t get one cover?
