The Sound Stage series brings one of rock’s most influential female-fronted acts for an updated live DVD packed with their hits, a whopping 24-song set. Heart remains captivating here, but some selections seem toned down, as if the Wilson sisters turned down the volume to placate the mothers in the audience. And too brightly lit to feel truly intimate, the views feel detached as a result.

Still, Heart is tight and no less powerful as they count off career highlights, putting new twists on old favorites. Ann’s voice is tainted by the rasp of age, but she still manages to impress with her range and conviction. Towards the end of the set she struggles with the high notes on numbers like “Barracuda,” we’re talking about a 24-song set tantamount to the vocal Olympics, so perhaps it’s in order to cut the woman a break.

Nancy is ravishing and youthful, making her guitar chops seem like child’s play as she bounds about the stage. The set also offers up some rare covers, counting three Led Zeppelin tunes, including the Lovemongers’ dynamic version of “The Battle of Evermore,” along with a version of Elton John’s “Love Song.” The DVD also includes an interview.

Production gripes and vocal fatigue set aside, Heart gives one hell of a performance.
