This is the companion DVD to Sensuous, the CD that Japanese artist Cornelius released last year. Here, each song from Sensuous has been remixed in 5.1 surround sound and matched with a piece of visual art, often to stunning effect.

Cornelius’ music already walks an intriguing tightrope strung between glitchy and catchy. You can never quite predict where a song is going, and the addition of visual stimulation makes many of these cuts mesmerizing.

For the mostly acoustic guitar opening cut, “Sensuous,” Cornelius uses a colorful visual where paint drippings float and dance through the air. While interesting, the presentation is not too far beyond what’s found on many computer screen savers.

Things get interesting real quick, though, as everyday, around-the-house items come alive on “Fit Song” where sugar cubes stack themselves into trees and slippers go for a stroll all by themselves. “Gum” musically is a repetitive guitar freak-out riff set to a visual of hundreds of little mouths mouthing.

Most of the visual clips were created by Tsujikawa Koichiro using C.G.I., but there is also some very complicated claymation guaranteed to get a conversation started.

Whether you describe Sensurround as avant-garde, trippy or just plain weird, it is difficult to avert your eyes from the screen.

A bonus CD includes nine songs being released in the United States for the first time.
