Fans of the hit period drama "Boardwalk Empire" will have a chance to relive every moment of Season 3, along with a few extra features, with the DVD box set.

"Boardwalk Empire": The Complete Third Season packs the entire third season onto three types of media: two DVDs (each side containing three episodes), five Blu-ray discs and a digital copy from HBO Select.

While the "Boardwalk Empire" episodes are certainly the box set's highlights, the special features provide a few hours of informative entertainment. The biggest downside is that the extras are only on the Blu-ray discs (but if you don’t have a Blu-ray player, this may be irrelevant).

The most interesting special feature is the director’s chair where directors Tim Van Patten and Allen Coulter break down critical scenes in the third season. They each go through scenes they directed and discuss their artistic decisions for certain shots. Coulter and Patten also discuss everything from camera angles and speed to humor. For example, they explain one humorous scene in which a man attacks another man with an iron.

Another interesting feature is “Distilling Season 2.” The show's contributors give a quick five to 10-minute summary of what happened in the second season and the implications they will have on the third. New viewers will find this feature especially useful.

Other features include “Boardwalk Chronicle,” in which viewers can keep track of the major characters while watching the show; “American Empires,” where viewers can learn more about the real life gangsters featured in the show; and “Newsreels,” which gives viewers history lessons on actual events and people that inspire the show and audio commentaries from the cast and crew.

There’s also a message from executive producer Martin Scorsese and a feature that introduces viewers to the new characters in Season 3.

"Boardwalk Empire": The Complete Third Season releases on Aug. 20, 2013.
