Filled with trick plays, botched punts and crushing sacks, USC’s 49-17 drubbing of the Illinois Fighting Illini in last January’s Rose Bowl almost seems worthy of an official commemorative DVD. However, the current trend in boxed sports home entertainment is to give fans the complete, unedited game and never has a sporting event screamed for the old NFL Films’ highlight treatment like the 94th edition of “The Granddaddy of Them All.” Despite flashes of excitement, USC led 21-3 at the half and officially ended it in the third when Joe McKnight turned a fumble into a 65-yard coming-out party.

Adding the fact that no discerning Trojan fan officially commemorates anything other than a national championship these days, you have to wonder who would want to keepsake a Rose Bowl victory that Chris Fowler refers to in the disc’s not-so-special features as a “pretty good consolation prize.”
