The line between romantic love and the love of two best girl friends is explored in Sonja. The film’s titular protagonist struggles with her feelings after realizing that her love of best friend Julia is more than just friendship. But even as her struggles drive away everyone close to her, Sonja is forced to silently watch as Julia seeks out love from young men.

Unfortunately, the film does not particularly excel. The concept of unrequited love between friends may be a bit fresher when lesbianism is involved, but it is hardly novel.
