Not the best work of one of America’s best directors, Billy Wilder (The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard), The Major and the Minor is still interesting to see. Wilder’s directorial debut showcases Ginger Rogers as a broke young woman, posing as a girl to get a cheaper ticket on a train home.

This being screwball, the situation gets more and more ridiculous as she falls for a strange man (Ray Milland) who takes her for a kid. There’s something awkward about the premise of a grown man growing increasingly attracted to Rogers. Though the audience knows she’s only faking, Milland does not, and watching him fight back his sexual feelings is a bit icky.
