Ambivalently saddled with a premise both original and awkward, Definitely, Maybe gives a father (Ryan Reynolds) the unenviable position of explaining to his young daughter (Abigail Breslin) how he romanced her mother. In a dad-centric year of film (see this week’s Top 10 list), full of fathers struggling and often failing to connect with their children, Definitely, Maybe presents a rosy and optimistic view of the relationship.

Presented with three choices of a potential mother, like so many scoops of Neapolitan ice cream, the three actresses serve up very different yet enticing flavors. Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz especially charm and delight in their roles.

In the end, it all comes down to generic vanilla, Breyer’s chocolate or Häagen-Dazs strawberry.
