Loosely based on Robert A. Heinlein’s classic satirical sci-fi novel, Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 special effects film stars soap opera émigré Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and pre-comeback Neil Patrick Harris.

The story is set in a fascistic, militaristic future in which only soldiers are granted citizenship. Unfortunately, they are also shipped off to fight giant alien bugs. This hammy guilty pleasure retains some of the satire from the source novel, but is mostly just a big, loud bug movie.

The subsequent lackluster direct-to-video sequels ditch the commentary altogether and just go for CG bug splatter.
