Wong Kar Wai paints the Hong Kong night in a swirl of light and color, in this plaintive, lyrical film about romantic yearning. The film is centered on the titular restaurant and tells the story of two policemen unlucky in love and their intersecting and colliding lives in the city as they search for connection. Like In the Mood for Love, it displays the filmmaker’s poetic touch in capturing the disconnected nature of modern life. It may also be his best film.
