If you've ever been to the strip of shops at Heliotrope and Melrose, you know it's a cool place to be. There's the delicious vegan food at Pure Luck (tofu pesto sandwich!) and the amazing ice cream combinations specially created by the folks at Scoops (Thai tea, brown bread, lychee, etc). If food doesn't fill your fancy, you can chat up the people at Bicycle Kitchen and get your exercise on. A great way to check out this community is to attend ArtCycle Saturday, an art show/street fair/bike ride that will showcase LA's up and coming art scene. The streets will be lined with artists, including interactive art like live silkscreening and a bicycle that can paint things. There will also be live music, salsa dancers, and DJs.
